During the early 20th century, the Spanish Government's interest in establishing an airmail service in the country led to the study of establishing a postal line between the islands of Mallorca and Barcelona. The first flights from the island to Barcelona took off in 1921, even though there was no airport in Palma de Mallorca. The planes that took off were seaplanes.

Aero-Taxi de Palma launched its first regular flights in 1934. The company also established a flight training facility in Son Joan.

In May 1935, a Spanish Postal Airlines company known as LAPE was established. Son Sant Joan airport became a regular air link between Palma and Madrid a month later. Later, a new route connecting Barcelona with Palma replaced the old one.

Son Sant Joan airport was built on the site of a military base. It was only 6 kilometers away from Son Bonet, which used to be a commercial airport. Due to the tourism boom and the arrival of larger airlines, such as Air France and Aviaco, Son Bonet needed to be bigger to support the demand.

In 1954, the airport's runway was expanded and paved to accommodate the use of F-86 Sabre fighter planes. This paved runway led to the construction of taxiways and apron facilities. During this period, Son Bonet started receiving large groups of tourists from European airlines such as Air France, Aviaco, and BEA.

Since it became a commercial airport on July 7, 1960, it has accommodated international and domestic flights. The facility was expanded to accommodate more passengers in 1961. The passenger count at the airport has stayed below 1 million since 1962.
